On Jan 9, the Sichuan Pilot Free Trade Zone held a meeting in Urumqi using the catchy slogan "collaborating, opening-up, and sharing opportunities".
Parties from Chengdu and Urumqi signed agreements vowing to cooperate in areas such as security, railway transportation, and business exchange.
They will open up an international trade route along the Silk Road Economic Belt, promote coordinated development of competitive industries in both regions, strengthen trade, and build shared institutions.
The government of Qingbaijiang district in Chengdu and the administrative committee of the Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe district) signed an agreement on the reform and development of free trade zones.
Cooperation will be strengthened especially in areas such as multimodal transport, cross-border e-commerce, finance, bulk trade, and information resource sharing.
The opening of the Chengdu-Europe Train in 2013 is what initially sparked cooperation between Sichuan and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The opening of the "Chengdu-Urumqi-Tilburg" line on Dec 20 last year further strengthened cooperation between the two regions.
Both parties will strengthen cooperation in custom clearance. International train operating companies in the two cities signed agreements to build Urumqi into a trading hub for China and central Europe.
The Chengdu International Railway Port and Toutunhe have also proposed construction of a so-called "Chengdu-Xinjiang Industrial Cooperation Park" to further promote industrial cooperation through resource and information sharing.
In addition, both parties will strengthen cooperation in promoting investment. They plan to build a communication platform for export-oriented enterprises and further explore business opportunities.
